Megan Reid- Truth

Truth (Book #3 in the Chasing Yesterday series)
Robin Wasserman

Don’t be fooled… just because there is a lot of writing does not mean this is a review you should ignore!!!

Hey All. I just finished an AMAZING book that I thought I should tell you about. To fully understand, I will fill you in a little bit about the first two books in this terrific series. This may be a bit rough since I read the first two books early in 8th grade, but here goes:
A girl wakes up in a hospital with no memory of herself or her past. This Jane Doe is clueless, and all she knows is that she was in some kind of accident. She chooses to be called J.D. because she has no idea what her real name is. Her “mother” ends up finding her (after J.D. spent some time in an orphan shelter place- something like that, I can’t remember the name) and bringing her home. But things are not right. Her mother sends her to get sessions because she thinks J.D. is crazy. J.D. knows that the visions, the music, and the lights are all real, but she knows she is not going insane. They are about to send J.D. away to some institute for help, but she escapes, and in the process she almost kills the women who pretended to be her mother. The escape got her away from Ansel Sykes, who pretended to be her “therapist”, but the struggle is far from over. With the help of her friend Daniel (from the shelter place), J.D. is on the run and looking for answers. The second book is when J.D. finds out that she is the property of a company called LysenCorp. and that she is some powerful weapon. She is using her powers, and she is fierce. After sleeping in abandoned houses, and stealing food, Daniel and J.D. find a place to stay with other homeless kids. J.D. leaves Daniel to continue on her own before she hurts or kills him. Daniel turns her into LysenCorp, and that’s where the third book begins.

J.D. has accepted the fact that she is in LysenCorp. Institute and this is where she belongs. This is her home, and she has learned the rules. Dr. A (Ansel Sykes) sat her down and told her the truth about her past, and he made sure she knew that she was special. J.D. is back with her old friends, in a windowless building with all white walls. J.D. is using her powers and regaining strength, and relearning everything that she already knew/had before the accident. Things get a little suspicious when Daniel shows up as a worker in the institute and J.D. is under a different impression what she sees and does everyday. Things are not what they seem to be, and in the process of figuring out the real truth, there is a lot of sneaking around, pain, and mental break downs. J.D. has to get out of the Institute with Daniel, and she has to free the other girls as well. She is the only one that has the ability to fight, she is special. J.D. has learned to control her powers, and to block out the brainwashing. She is no longer a zombie. She is unstoppable…well maybe. I do not want to give away such a tremendous ending, but I will say that there is a gunshot, a gray device, a demolished building, mind-boggling confessions, and a whole lot of emotion.

I loved this book. The author takes you inside J.D.’s mind and it is absolutely incredible. You can almost hear the music swell, and see the pulsing light. You can feel the agony, and smell the fear. The truth burns, and your predictions are put to the test. J.D. unlocks her mind, and the secrets unfold. The institute is eerie and you tremble when Dr. A is with J.D., even though he does not deceive you. J.D. and Daniel have a special friendship, and a bond that will not break no matter what they go through. They have each others back. Controlling her powers is just another test. Everything seems to be a test. The master plan is revealed. J.D. gets the strength to fight. There is no turning back, even with all of her second guessing. Don’t you worry; everything makes sense in the end. I promise you that this book will not disappoint.

Day of Silence 2010

Every day thousands of students are silenced out of fear of being ridiculed. They are silenced and thus prevented from expressing who they are, what they feel. Thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students are bullied and harassed and are kept silent. Day of Silence is an event started in 1996 so that the silence of those who are victimized is heard. Hundreds of thousands of students will be part of this day, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and straight alike so that the harassment may stop and voices may be heard once again. April 16 is the date of this years Day of Silence. Please support those unspoken by choosing to remain silent as they have so many times. Many will do this for the full 24 hours of the day, from sunrise to sunset, or just while at school. In the years since the first day of silence many more have participated but hateful acts are still committed each day and students are still afraid to speak out. Please support this cause. Find more information at http://www.dayofsilence.org/content/getinformation.html.

I Suck

Has anyone ever noticed how self-conscious everybody is? Every day at school I hear people saying how lame they are or complaining of their self-declared ugliness*cough cough* mirror in the girls’ bathroom. And my question is: why? We all envy someone else. Someone who in our minds is perfect, or at least better than us. But what most fail to realize is that the person we idolize has problems just like we do. The grass is always greener on the other side…until you get there. They probably have similar problems with themselves and idolize others the same way you do. Unless, of course, your idol is an egotistical loser. I guess what I’m trying to say is…we all suck. Every person on this planet called Earth sucks at something. And it’s ok. IT IS OK TO SUCK. I, Joyce Andrea Ingari, SUCK! As much as we might want to trick ourselves, nobody’s perfect. This is the only thing I will agree with Miley Cyrus on. So stop pretending! As much as you may want to believe that the girl with the great hair that always goes where it’s supposed to is perfect, she’s not. And as much as you think there are no flaws with the guy who leaves almost the entire female population breathless by merely walking down the hall, well, there are. If you think that you suck, welcome to life. So you may not be great at anything involving a ball (hi, my name is Joyce), or you may not have the highest GPA ever recorded, but life will go on. What I am really trying to say is that no matter how much you suck at volleyball, or can’t sing a note to save your life, the sun will still rise tomorrow (this does not apply during certain months in Alaska). You are good at something. Find it. Embrace it. And for god’s sake, step out of other peoples’ shadows and be your own flashlight.

literary cafe quarter 3

I just wanted to say that I personally think the blog has been a huge success. It not only lets us talk about our great books but it opens up discussions about our lives.I feel as though I have learned more about people that I wouldn't have known without reading their posts. It is great to see that now our attention is being shifted to issues going on not only in the world but right here in our community. It is a huge eye opener when you see how strong people feel about a topic; the one that comes to mind to me is bullying I wanted to commend those who put post up sharing their feelings toward those issues. Overall I love the blog! Everybody keep up the good work:)

How to be a Good Friend

The other day I was talking to my mom after school, and she showed me this poem. She didn't tell me who wrote it, all she said was it was from a student down at the Elem. School that she works with. This poem is simply wonderful, and extremely true. I thought i should share it with all you fellow bloggers!

How to be a Good Friend
To be a good friend
You can't push
Let the other person talk to you.
Always listen
And never interrupt.
Don't tell secrets
Even if they're juicy.
Be the one to help someone up
Laugh and joke when it's appropriate.
Who cares if the popular girl
Comes up to you
And asks if you want to make plans.
If you made plans with your BF
Keep them.
Be caring and gentle,
Never hold a grudge,
Be a friend that you would want.
Always compliment
Never put down
Share a snack with
A New Kid
Hang out with people
Different.
It can't hurt.
If you've done it right
You feel lighter,
Happier,
A better Friend.

Remembering the Lost...

Like Melissa and Chantal, I wanted to post about something that’s been on my mind lately. On Saturday, March 27, 2010, a man named Zachary Sherkanowski passed away tragically in a car crash on Moultonborough Neck Road. At only 24 years old, he left behind a lifetime full of hopes and dreams. He was currently a chef at the Village Kitchen in Moultonborough and loved to cook, play his guitar, and be on the lake. He also left behind his wife and beautiful young daughter, Sadey, who will terribly miss her daddy. Please keep this family in your mind and prayers, especially through the holiday.

THANK YOU.

Bullying, a issue that is more serious then you think.

When we think about bullying we don’t think of it as such a big deal. We don’t think about it as resulting in that serious of an issue. Like cruel things don’t happen. Some girls kept harassing and stalking her because she dated the popular football player. Phoebe Prince of Massachusetts committed suicide on January 14, 2010, because the harassment was so bad. Then after Phoebe killed herself they posted on her Facebook wall “Accomplished .” This behavior is cruel and unfair. Bullying is a very serious issue. There have been recent issues at this school of bullying. It caused some people to even move high schools because of it.

BULLYING = STOP NOW!

Bullying has latley been an issue at ILHS. Did you know that over 5.7 million kids & teens across the US have been victims of bullying? ILHS should be a friendly zone, not a place to stop others from getting an education. Bullys can lead to students feeling anxious, afraid, it affects teens self-esteem. Then unforunatley the thought of suicide becomes an option. But It doesnt have to be, it shouldnt be, because no one should be bullying anyone! This is the part where everyone steps up and says "No More Bullying!"

To stop bullying there has to be effective programs to help stop this.

If you are being bullied the #1 thing to do is: Tell your parents, councelor, principal or even someone you feel comfortable with. If you are seeing someone else being bullied you need to get an adult, ASAP; dont wait or you will be too late and you could have saved a life. For a while an idea came to my head. I was thinking of setting up a foundation or Awareness to help stop this foolish business. What do you think?

Ryan Snyder-Scorpions

Name: Ryan Snyder

Author: Walter Dean Myers

Title: Scorpions

Pages: 224

Rating: 8

This is a very tragic book that relates to a lot of lives today. The central issue of this book is Jamal’s brother ;he was guilty by association in a homicide. His brother was the leader of a crack dealing gang called the Scorpions who got in a hold up in a deal and shots got fired. So because of his brothers high bail amount in jail, Jamal takes up the leader role as a 12 year old and starts to deal drugs to earn his brother’s bail money. I noticed that throughout the book Jamal had problems after problems. At first Jamal's dad left him when he was a child and caused his family a lot of problems. Then his brother was put in jail. After that his brother was stabbed in jail. Most of the events in this book are tragic. At the end of this book, Jamal’s only friend Tony killed someone while he was being mugged. Tony was sent away to live with his dad in Puerto Rico and Jamal never saw him. After Jamal suffered severe depression.

This is a great book. The author has written a lot of books and this is one of my favorites. Most of Myers books are about young men and their struggles through life. He is truly one of my favorite authors. I learned from this book that you should always be grateful for what you have because there is always someone who may have less than you.

The recruit is the story of a boy named James who is a troubled child. His mom is a professional theif and he has the mother load of cash and items. A family mishap lead James to a boys home forcing him to leave his sister. After a rough night in the boys home, he wakes up where he did not fall asleep. James woke at Cherub. Cherub is a spy camp for kids to help the secret service. James had to go through some touch challenges that impressed the counselor and ranked him higher than anyone else.
I noticed that as I read the book, it seemed that the author had a lust for what he was writing. In my opinion it sounded as if the book he wrote was actually either a past life or a dream he had always wanted to accomplish. As most people have dreamed, being a spy would be an epic job and you would have a lot of fun. But for Robert Muchamore, it seemed as if it was the only thing he wanted to accomplish in life. He made the detale and passion great and it made you want to read more.
