Chantal Bonbon - Freedom Writers Diary

Freedom Writers Diary
By: Ms. Gruwell’s High school class
Pages read: 275 (finished)
Rating: 9

The central issue that the Freedom Writers are trying to accomplish is saving young teens from messing up there life by doing drugs. They want teens to get an education so they can have a real job and actually make something of themselves. This book is filled with journeys that takes the Freedom Writers to Washington D.C. to meet the secretary of Education and to be interviewed by Connie Chung on Prime Time Live.

While reading this book I was reminded of my two brothers, Johnny and Wesley. Both of my brothers were high school dropouts because they chose drugs over education. From seeing how little education my brothers have, makes me want to go to college and get the knowledge that I deserve because I am not going to be a dropout, even when times are tough, I am going all the way!

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone that knows someone that has a drug addiction. For all the drug dealers in the world, I pray for you every night.

  1. Chantal, I know how it feels to have the people around you doing drugs. It's a weird feeling. It's so common for people in our high school to be doing illegal drugs. It's a sad thing. In my opinion drugs is just another way of crying out for attention, making yourself feel good. It's sad really. I'm glad you can be open about such a awkward topic to talk about.

  2. I love how you added a personal story to your piece. It makes situations like illeagal drugs seem more real and consequential. I think your writing could influence a lot of decisions about drugs vs. education. Nice job!

  7. Mrs. Culkin and Annie have a valid pont. Reading your blog made me think about all those people and feel sorry for them because they do deserve better and although they are offered an education they may not know anything different than high school drop outs and drugs. If you are willing to share your stories and view on drugs and maybe some other topics I really do think people will want to listen to you.

  8. Chantal, you have been inspirational to me not only with this review but also getting to know you on an even deeper level this year. You are such a strong person and I know you will succeed in all that you choose to pursue in your life. The movie Freedom Writer's is one of my all time favorite's. I was not aware that it was originally a book and would now like to check it out.

  9. Thank you Alexandra and Chelsea for your wonderful comments. From me reading your comments makes feel that you both are inspirational to me too. I have observed how you take situations and take it one step at a time. You are inspiring me to go ahead and share my stories, because it might even actually save a life. Or make someone think about their actions. So Thank you very much for the inspiration. <3

  10. The connections to you're brothers was a good thing to include in the review. You're review is also good because books can motivate us, or do the opposite. I'm sure that you're willing to progress through school because of the inspiration from the book. Awesome review.

  11. Hi Chantal,

Your writing gave me goosebumps! This is exactly the dialogue Mrs. Diamond and I were trying to create when we started the blog. I have read this book and as a teacher it really inspired me to try and effect positive change with my students. I am looking forward to reading more of your writing.

    Mrs. B.
