Jessica Holden- A Time for Dancing

A Time for Dancing

Pg.77 out of 257
Rating: 8.5

A Time for Dancing shows the journey of a teenagers life as she battles cancer, with her best friend by her side. Sam and Julie are best friends who are about to enter senior year. As their summer goes by Julie discovers a pain in her hip, and believe it is just from dancing. Little does she know, Julie has diffuse histiocytic lymphoma. Julie has stage four of this type of cancer. Once Julie is diagnosed she has realized how differently people treat her now, even her parents. Julie and her family have decided to start chemotherapy to help Julie conquer this disease. I have not finished this book yet but I am hoping that it keeps me intrigued as it does now. Right now I am wondering if Julie stays strong, and fights this cancer.
This book mainly affects me because I know what it feels like to lose someone close to you from cancer. Even though Julie has not passed away yet I still think how devastating it is to see someone suffer with a horrid disease. While reading this book so far I have learned that even if someone does get an illness you just have to keep going with your life, and stay strong. This book is a combination of sad and happy events that are shown throughout the main story. I am excited to finish reading this book, and find out what happens to Julie.

  1. This seems like a very good story. It reminds me of my sister's keeper. Anyone who has seen that movie I'm sure can see how the story, in a way relates. Me, personally, I've only met one person in my entire life that has had cancer. When I was living in Belmont, a girl in the grade below me had it. I didn't personally know her, but I know she was optimistic about it. Sadly in my 7th grade year she died. I hope in the end of this story she doesn't die. It can effect a lot of people.

  2. Sounds Great Jess! just have a couple questions... in what ways did her parents treat her differently too? and also were Sam and Julie very good dancers, as in taking classes and competing? or was it just for fun. It sounds very interesting, and very intriguing, must be very hard to go into their final year of high school knowing it could be their last.

  3. hey Leyla! in the book Sam and Julie do take dance classes, and are very good dancers. About 3 days after Julie is diagnosed with cancer there was a recital that they were supposed to be in but since julie was to weak she sat in the audience, and supported sam. Now that Julie is sick, she thinks that she won't be able to dance anymore, imagine if you could never dance again i know you would be devistated. When Julie returned home she felt that her parents were treating her diffrent. By this i mean that she felt she couldn't talk to her parents, and her parents acted like she couldn't do things her self or even act the same becasue she has cancer. I would definatly recommend this book to you, because it does show how dancing can complete you!

  4. First off, I used to take dance lessons, and I was pretty serious about it. Even now, I go to friend's recitals and wish to be back dancing again. So I know how hard it must be for Julie. Second, I would go crazy if people treated my differently because of cancer or some disease. I would not know how to push through it. And lastly, I had an aunt named Julie who died from cancer. I wrote about her in my writing piece based on the picture. Anyways, it was so tough watching my aunt go through cancer, and she did not give up. She was strong, and she kept going. But it was eventually her time to go. I really hope that the character in the book does not die, even though I have a feeling she will. I just might have to pick up this book. It could make me stronger to read it.
