Imagine living day by day never knowing if you would make it without getting abused. Imagine living knowing you mothered two of your father’s children, because he raped you. That was Precious Jones’s life. She lived day to day being beaten by her mother and raped by her father when he came home. Precious spent her life unappreciated by her family and hiding her emotions. At school, teachers would yell and scream at her calling her useless but only because they would not take the time to find out who Precious Jones really was. Being so disrespected, she dropped out only to shortly meet the women who would change her life, Ms. Rain. Ms. Blue Rain was the only person Precious had ever met that listened to her, respected her, and wanted her to turn her life around for the better. The life of Precious was harsh until she found a person who was more like a mother to her than her real mother had ever been.
My thoughts: Precious stays with you everywhere you go. You think about her and her story at all times of the day. She makes you feel whippy, because of how strong she had to be just to wake up in the morning. Finally Precious makes you say thank you. She makes you say thank you to everyone and say thank you for everything. I finished this book in one day because it was the most empowering novel I have picked up. The message Precious sent to me was to stay strong and love yourself. In the darkest times there is always hope, so never give up!
P.S. Do not feel afraid to cry while reading the book.
Precious seems like an amazing book that has the power to put a lot into your mind. This is defiantly on the top of my must read list. I've heard so many good things about it :).
ReplyDeleteMelissa....I know this book with defiantly be hard for anyone to read, but I believe you will love reading it. It gives such a great meaning to living with your head held high throught the rough times.
ReplyDeleteOne word, Deep!
ReplyDeleteMadison, I love your respose to this book. It seems like a very emotional book!I totally agree that after reading this it would still be in your head. I really want to read this book. And I have no doubt in my mind that I will have some tears.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that i would be able to,live one day in this girls shoes. I wonder why she didn't run away? maybe she was hoping that one day she would get the love and respect she deserves from her family. I have not yet read the book but i saw the movie. I cried but not as much as I thought i would, i think I was in to much shock to cry. It is amazing how someone can live like this, I give her all the props in the world, and I agree with you one hundred percen it really does make you even more thankful for what you have. I would love to read this book!
ReplyDeleteYes Teghan I wonder why she did not just run away. Was it because she loved her parents? Although I could not imagine loving anyone who beat or raped you but I also wonder how many people go through this day to day. Madison, your response was very powerful and Precious seems like a very emotional book. Although it may be a hard book to handle I might give it a try :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the comments! I personally believe that Precious did not just run away becasue she was so scared. Yes, she was scared at home, but at least at home she had some place to sleep, along with access to food. I also did not think she just ran way because she was looking out for her children. Teghan, you are truly right about crying out of shock. I was sad that Precious had to live through this, but I was in shock the whole time because of the horrific acts throughout her life.
ReplyDeleteMadison, this was a very deep post and i am deffinetly going to have to read this book. Everyone around me has said how emotional this book is but that is how a good story is made. The life this girl had was rough for her but the fact that she stayed strong through it all made the book probably more exciting. To go through what she had to is something i certainly couldn't do, but i was also wondering why didn't she just run away? I certainly would have but then again to leave everything behind even if the life she is living in isn't the best, probably isn't the wisest decision either. So i can understand why she didn't leave, but now there is a movie and i want to see that too! I was wondering though if you really did cry that much and if the book really had gotten to you to the point you had cried? This seems like an incredible book to read and i am going to read it soon. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteim glad to know there are people who can get such emotions for a person they do not know. this shows the real power this book possesses. people dont realize how harsh life can be. even to people in our own grade might be struggling like this girl. its good some people notice...and care
ReplyDeleteMadison, I also cried many times while reading this book. I felt the same way you did after reading it. I was aprehensive at first when I learned what it was about, but I am erally glad I decided to read it. It impacted my perspective on life and other peoples lives.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a very powerful and emotional book. I cant imagine what that would be like going through that day by day. I would really like to read this book.
