In the winter of 1943 two Jewish children run from the Nazis with their father and stepmother. In desperation there parents change their names to Hansel and Gretel to protect them from the Nazis. Gretel was circumcised so he had to be very cautious about where and who he went to the bathroom in front of. Their journey begins when they come upon this little cabin in the middle of the woods and find bread everywhere. They find this old lady named Magda also know as the witch in her village. Magda wants to help so she brings them to her friends in the village. They are all Jewish to and are running for there life. There life depends on each other now and they are all pretending to be a family of Christian descent.
I learned that life in those times were life or death if you were Jewish you were most likely to be murdered unless you hid it well enough, or got out of the country. This book helped me see the issue of world war ll better. I saw the life of a Jewish person in that time period and what they went through on a daily basis. I wondered what they were thinking while they were escaping the Nazis.
This story, which is a true story, really touched me. I felt like I was there and I experienced it. The events were real and made me realize how lucky we really are.
